David Cameron hopes the vision of a “Big Society” of community work and social enterprise will be one of the great legacies of the coalition’s time in power. The idea of a big society is about decentralising power and empowering communities and local governments.

As is to be expected, it already has its critics, with public spending cuts rife and confusion with regards to how the power in government will shift and what big society actually is. I must admit, it’s not the easiest concept to get your head around…

So… bit political for a PRN blog so far and why, I hear you ask, are we talking about big society today?

At 5pm today on CIPRTV, Jane Wilson, CEO of the CIPR, and Claire Cater, Director at Bell Pottinger, will discuss how prepared the PR profession as a whole is for the potential impact of an initiative that will have a knock on effect on all sectors as well as communities and individuals. The discussion is set to provide an introduction to the big society idea, set it in the context of our industry, and then examine some of the opportunities and challenges it presents.

Fear not, if 5pm is not a good time for you, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the discussion, tweeting our own thoughts (@PRNetwork) and summing up the conclusions made below. If you have any thoughts or comments of your own, make them below or get in touch on Twitter.
