We’re very excited this week to be launching a paper for our client Zipcar about London’s complex transport system: “Car Lite: How car clubs will make more Londoners drive less”.

Traffic+on+Park+Lane

As the leading car club operator, which has been running in London for well over a decade, Zipcar is in a great position to lobby for change which will benefit Londoners as they travel around the capital.

The Car Lite paper sets out the challenges London faces when it comes to car ownership and use, and the established evidence, which demonstrates the positive impact of car clubs. It also proposes policy recommendations to accelerate car club adoption, so that the benefits can be realised as soon as possible. Did you know, for example, that:

• All the cars parked next to London pavements take up an area the size of Southwark?
• The population of London is forecast to grow by 14% in the next decade, which could mean an additional 330,000 cars?
• London has some of the worst air quality in Western Europe?
• Every Zipcar put on the street to share replaces at least 14 privately owned cars?
• Car club members drive seven times fewer in terms of short trips (less than five miles) than car owners?
• Car club members reduce road congestion at peak times, because they do not commute by car?
• Car club members are twice as likely to use bikes and public transport as other Londoners?

Written by transport policy expert Malcolm Fergusson, the Car Lite paper has the potential to effect real change in a city much loved by its citizens by giving them more options for easy travel without adding to congestion. The introduction of more car club bays from companies like Zipcar will complement other modes of transport to ensure that London can truly stake its claim to being the “greatest city on earth” as laid out in the Mayor’s 20:20 Vision.

Our public affairs campaign involves working closely with transport authorities and policy makers to identify specific opportunities to bring about positive change. This is the latest project The PR Network has run for Zipcar since we started working with the firm in January 2013, just after it was acquired by Avis Budget Group. We’ve also:

…Launched a major campaign to help small businesses learn from their pioneering predecessors, the Smarter Business Blueprint
…Promoted a successful partnership with one of London’s largest councils
…Instigated the second annual investigation into the UK sharing economy with the Pay-As-You-Live report, authored by Zipcar

We’re very proud of the work we’ve done with Zipcar, working very much in partnership with our fantastic client contacts in Wimbledon, and drawing on the power of the freelance network we’ve built up to support this hugely diverse account.
