800 women die in childbirth every single day

The PR Network is working with Marie Stopes International on its Make Women Matter campaign to raise public awareness of the UN’s Millennium Development Goal 5: to reduce global maternal mortality ratios by three quarters from 1990 -2015. There are just 500 days left to achieve the goals, and sadly MDG 5 remains the most off-track.

Today we are asking our contacts to collectively take action to drive signatories to a petition on Change.org which will help Marie Stopes International impress the importance of meeting MDG #5 at the UN General Assembly this September in New York.

If you don’t read another line of this post, please visit here and pledge your support. Male or female, young or old – we all have mothers, daughters, sisters or friends who could be in this position if it were not for an accident of birth. “There for the grace of God, go I” – these words have never rung more true.

Worldwide the maternal mortality ratio dropped by 45 per cent between 1990 and 2013, from 380 to 210 deaths per 100,000 live births. We need to take a concerted stance to re-focus global attention on this critical issue. Some countries such as Ethiopia have already exceeded the goal, proving that even a resource-poor nation can reduce maternity mortality – with the right support.

Marie Stopes International is one of the largest international family planning organisations in the world. Millions of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable women trust them to provide them with quality family planning and reproductive healthcare. The charity is also present in the UK, providing family planning and sexual health advice and services to UK men and women.

Despite the incredible efforts of 9,000 Marie Stopes employees at clinics around the world, maternal deaths from complications in pregnancy and childbirth are still at an unacceptably high level – 287,000 in 2013. There are 2.8 million unsafe abortions each year as women who cannot access quality family planning services resort to unsafe measures – to avoid bearing a child who they will not be able to support.

By providing women with access to quality healthcare services and proper advice and support around family planning, those women will be able to make better decisions for themselves and their families. This will decrease the number of unwanted pregnancies, the incidence of unsafe abortions and ultimately have a positive effect on future population control.

As a company founded by women who have been lucky enough to be born in the first world, and with 12 children born to us and our staff, this is a charity dear to our hearts at The PR Network. Please do something good today.
